And welcome to May 1st on Monday morning.

Tuesday will mark twelve years since the Greens in Canada elected our first Member of Parliament, leading to green growth in many provinces and more MPs in Parliament. Of course, I was that first MP, back on May 2nd, 2011. It was the amazing team of volunteers knocking on doors, day after day, week after week over nearly two years, from my nomination in 2009 until the federal election in 2011, who made the idea of a Green MP – someday – a reality. I hope you had a Happy Earth Day!  I write from Edmonton where I joined the Green Party of Alberta for a great teaching moment at the home of Michael and Beth Hunter who have transformed their typical suburban ranch into a zero-carbon home.  They installed geothermal which let them cap the gas that used to run the (now disconnected) furnace. And they have solar panels on the roof. Michael is also a Green Party of Alberta candidate in the May 29 provincial election. (Note: Only Alberta residents can donate.) Six days and counting to Earth Day! The Green Party is holding more local cross-country events than ever! Coast to coast to coast details will be on the Green Party website soon, but I do want to urge Saanich-Gulf Island folks to attend our Sidney event. Our amazing local volunteers have put together a movie event with a terrific panel to follow. We will be showing the documentary from Stand.Earth: Fracking the Peace at the Star Cinema in Sidney on Earth Day, April 22 at 4 pm.  The panel that follows will be moderated by our brilliant Green MLA Adam Olsen, and features author and journalist Ben Parfitt and Gilles Wendling.
